LABOR DAY FACTS: In the late 1800s, American workers, including children, toiled long hours in dangerous conditions for low pay. Labor unions and activists organized to demand better treatment, shorter workdays, and safer environments. The first official U.S. Labor Day celebration took place on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union, with a parade. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the law making Labor Day a national holiday to recognize the momentum of the labor movement.
PATRIOT DAY INFORMATION: On December 18, 2001 the United States Congress by a joint resolution (Public Law 107-89), declared September 11th as Patriot Day. During this day our nation pays tribute to the courageous men and women in uniform serving around the world and the devoted members of law enforcement, public safety, and intelligence communities at home who work night and day to protect us from harm and preserve our freedom. On September 11, 2001 ordinary citizens rose to the challenge and responded with extraordinary acts of courage, with some giving their lives. On Patriot Day, we remember all those who were taken from us in an instant and seek their lasting memorial in a safer and more hopeful world. At 8:46 AM on Friday, September 11th will we ask all to participate in a moment of silence.
E-BIKE INFORMATION: Dear Perry Middle School Parents, Guardians, Students, and Community Members,
In light of several recent accidents on campus, as well as serious incidents across Northeast Ohio—including the tragic loss of students in the Greater Cleveland area—we are asking families to take a moment to review important e-bike,e-scooter and other transportation device safety expectations. Additionally, Officer Battiato will soon be giving safety presentations to PMS students regarding the risks and safe usage of e-bicycles.
The increased use of e-bikes/e-scooters makes it especially important that students and families understand the laws and safety requirements governing their use. Ohio recognizes three classes of e-bikes—Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3—each with specific rules and restrictions.
Key Points:
- Under Ohio and Perry Village law, children under the age of 16 are not permitted to ride Class 3 e-bikes. These are defined as e-bikes capable of reaching speeds above 20 mph and should have a permanent classification tag affixed.
- By law, helmets are required for all riders of Class 3 e-bikes.
- E-bikes of all classes are not allowed on sidewalks if the motor is engaged. Riders must use the roadway's shared space and follow all traffic rules when using motor or pedal assist.
- Students must avoid reckless riding on campus and should wait until car and bus traffic has cleared before exiting on their e-bike.
Failure to comply with these regulations may result in consequences, including but not limited to:
- Loss of Privilege: Students who do not follow e-bike rules may lose the privilege of bringing their e-bike onto school property.
- Confiscation: E-bikes used in violation of local laws or school policies may be temporarily confiscated and released only to a parent or guardian.
- Restitution for Damages: Students operating e-bikes illegally may be subject to citations or other action by local law enforcement.
- Legal Consequences: Families may be required to pay for the repair or replacement of school or personal property damaged as a result of e-bike/e-scooter use.
- School Discipline: Unsafe or reckless behavior, including failure to follow traffic laws or endangering others, may result in disciplinary action following the student code of conduct.
Our goal is to promote safe and responsible riding practices while ensuring a secure environment for everyone. We appreciate your partnership in reinforcing these expectations with your students. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student's building administrators.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR NURSE, MRS. MCKOON: There have been reported cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) within the district. HFMD symptoms may include fever, sore throat, painful mouth sores that blister and rash commonly found on the hands and feet. HFMD is very contagious and can spread through contact with droplet particles after a person sneezes, coughs or talks, fluid from blisters, stool or from objects and surfaces with virus particles.
To help prevent catching or spreading HFMD, be sure to frequently wash your hands, avoid touching your face, clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and avoid close contact with others infected. RED ARMY/PIRATES SPORTS PASS: Middle School students are able to purchase a Red Army/Pirate Sports Pass for $50 (cash or check made payable to Perry Athletic Center). This pass is good for admission to all HOME athletic events, excluding tournaments and special events. Mrs. Carroll in the middle school front office is selling the passes; students may purchase their pass during their lunch block. Also for sale are 10 bulk tickets for $50, this is a savings for adults only. Gate ticket prices are $5/students and $8/adults, senior citizens are free.
PERRY FALL FESTIVAL TALENT SHOW: The Perry Fall Festival is on Saturday, September 12. Perry students will perform at this annual event on the main stage. More information is available in the middle school front office. Contact Mrs. Singer if you have any questions.
SCHOOL PICTURE INFORMATION: School pictures were taken at Jump Start, if your child had theirs taken and you did not order them, there is still time. SCHOOL PICTURE ONLINE ORDER School picture retakes will be on Thursday, October 15; this includes all students and staff who did not have their photo taken at Jump Start.
PMS & PES PARENT/TEACHER FALL CONFERENCES: Thursday, October 15
- Middle School students will be dismissed at 11 AM
